The discipline of Marathon was instituted in commemoration of the legendary race of the Greek soldier Phidippides, who in 490 B.C. ran from Marathon to Athens in order to report victory against the Persians at the Battle of Marathon. The Athens Marathon is sometimes referred to as 'THE' marathon, the 'AUTHENTIC' race.
